Cruising on De Kagerplassen

De Kagerplassen (lakes) region is heaven for those who like to be on the water and only 30 kilometres from Amsterdam. There are beautiful panoramic views across the water and meadows. The landscape invites you to enjoy a fine walk. What’s more, the terraces at the water’s edge are very tempting too! In short, you won’t suffer from boredom at De Kagerplassen.

Aboard our 40-year old boat we will cruise across De Kagerplassen, also known as ‘De Kaag’. De Kagerplassen is one of the most beautiful lake districts in De Randstad and, moreover, it offers a typically Dutch landscape with numerous reed-filled narrow waterways and mills. In the course of history, the higher land was reclaimed for agricultural and dairy farming purposes. This is why many little islands were formed throughout De Kagerplassen and we will sail past them.

An Oasis in De Randstad

The peace on the water is in sharp contrast with the very busy Randstad. The atmosphere here is quiet, relaxed and friendly. It’s quite normal to wave at the people in boats passing by. While cruising along, it’s also interesting to observe the surroundings from a different perspective. We will be sailing past a large number of characteristic mills. Their prime function is to keep the polders dry. A substantial number of them are still operational. Our skipper can tell you more about them during the trip.

From our embarkation point in Beinsdorp we will cruise for about an hour along the circular canal to De Kagerplassen, passing the villages of Hillegom and Lisse. On the way, we will moor at restaurant Het Kompas for a snack and a drink. Het Kompas has a typically and authentic Dutch shipping atmosphere. Weather permitting, we’ll sit outside on the spacious terrace at the water’s edge admiring the splendid views across De Kagerplassen. If the weather isn’t favourable, the restaurant is also very enjoyable inside. After lunch we will continue our boat trip.

We now have three mooring options:

  • At the Van Ruiten dairy farm – in summer we can see how butter and milk is made
  • In Warmond: an authentic old village with narrow streets and the most favoured watersports spot of De Kagerplassen
  • At an island somewhere on De Kagerplassen where we can swim or go for a short walk

We are looking forward to show our foreign visitors our Dutch countryside. Even visitors from within The Netherlands are sure find this cruising trip across De Kagerplassen worthwhile. We will have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves, take photographs and share our love of nature.

We had a great time on the boat with Pim! Even though the weather turned sour at one point, we were warm and dry under the canvas cover of the boat. The Kaagerplassen is beautiful in the sunshine, but we got to experience a completely different, and equally beautiful, aspect of it when the weather decided to get all dramatic on us! We stopped off at Het Kompas for a welcome (and very delicious) lunch, and then had rather better weather for our journey back to Beinsdorp.

The boat is comfortable, the views are outstanding and the skipper is wonderful! I will definitely be booking this again for some friends who are coming to visit.
