We would like to welcome you on board our vintage cargo ship which was built in 1923 and which we converted to a cruising houseboat. We will begin our boat trip in Haarlem. From there we will cruise along the Spaarne waterway to the village of Spaarndam and its surrounding area. As the scenery slowly passes you by, you will experience the landscape from a different perspective. This boat trip will show you that the Spaarne waterway was traditionally a vital lifeline of Haarlem and that it is now dammed up at the sluice-village of Spaarndam. We will cruise past classic windmills which were used to drain the surrounding marshland and convert them to polders. This boat trip will also take you past a large modern pumping-station which ensures that a large part of The Netherlands, which lies below sea-level, stays dry.

We will end our trip at our ship’s home berth near Spaarndam, an exceptional nature spot between Amsterdam and Haarlem. The whole trip will take approximately three to four hours. We will take you back to the trip’s starting point in Haarlem with our own transport, or to another destination upon prior consultation. It will be difficult to find a more typically Dutch way to view Haarlem and its surroundings than this boat trip.

The local

Proud skipperHello!

My name is Nanne Douma, 60 years of age, a physical geographer with a particular interest in geology, landscape and climate-change. I enjoy a good conversation about globalisation and the challenges we face caused by the big changes we see happening in the world around us. Naturally, I am also interested in Dutch inland navigation. I have been living in Spaarndam (near Haarlem) for the last 25 years so I know this area like the back of my hand!

You do not just sail a ship like this. Most of the time, my regular skipper’s wife comes along, but sometimes it can be a different enthusiast.

I am a part-time geography teacher in secondary education and enjoy nothing more than promoting ‘environmental awareness’: look around you and question what you see. And this is precisely what I like to do with our guests: looking around and exchanging thoughts.
